Description
This painting shows a festive culmination of a long and costly process that began in 1881 and was completed after many adventures in 1893: the opening of the Corinth canal. The depicted scene is certainly a snapshot of the inauguration of the public project, which is undoubtedly the most important of that time. Volanakis successfully meets the needs of such a project. The solemn atmosphere prevails and the focus is at the center of the painting surface. All ships taking part in the celebration are turned towards the canal, where there will be the peak of the event.
