Description
The «Deposition from the cross» of the Katsigras collection is one of the many issues with religious character created by the artist. The composition of the painting follows closely the older models of Italian Renaissance art that have been disseminated through Flemish reproductions in engravings. The body of the dead Christ is given in a bold naturalistic mood, which is unprecedented for the data of modern Greek art. The bold outlook abbreviations and the workmanlike shading, which assist in a more realistic view of such a sophisticated attitude, certify the influence of the Western European flows and the full break with the Post Byzantium artistic tradition.
